Edmonton Police Foundation announces Peter Chiarelli as Ambassador

Oilers President of Hockey Operations & GM will represent community

(Edmonton, AB) — Edmonton Oilers President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Peter Chiarelli will expand his community involvement as a newly appointed Edmonton Police Foundation (EPF) Ambassador. The Edmonton Police Foundation proudly announced Chiarelli’s Ambassador role, the first in EPF history, earlier today at Rogers Place.

The role of the Edmonton Police Foundation Ambassador is to support the EPF in community outreach and engagement activities. The ambassador will bring perspectives from other areas of business, other jurisdictions and connections to sectors such as business, entertainment, sports, arts and culture to enhance the EPF’s public presence and build bridges between the Foundation and broader community.

“Peter is a real leader and Oilers Entertainment Group is proud to call him one of our own. His legal background and knack for pursuing excellence was a natural fit for the Edmonton Police Foundation,” said Oilers Entertainment Group (OEG) Vice-Chairman Kevin Lowe, who serves as an Edmonton Police Foundation Board Member. “Peter is going to have a tremendous positive impact in our community and we should all be excited about what lies ahead.”

The Edmonton Police Foundation was established by community leaders in June 2000 as an independent, non-profit charitable organization to promote and support community policing, crime prevention and education initiatives developed by the Edmonton Police Service (EPS).

The EPF regards this as a unique opportunity to benefit from the support of one of Edmonton’s most notable sports and entertainment leaders.

“Mr. Chiarelli’s prominent leadership role in the business, sports and entertainment sectors will make him a tremendous asset to the Edmonton Police Foundation, and we’re looking forward to working with him on our community building initiatives,” said Edmonton Police Foundation Chair Sol Rolingher.

The role envisions Peter Chiarelli’s support of EPF events throughout the year, including the annual EPF True Blue Gala, and participation in awareness-building events such as ride-alongs, which build and strengthen the relationship between the police and community.

“There’s no doubt that with leadership comes responsibility, and that’s something that I’m really proud of. I’m humbled to represent our city and community as the Edmonton Police Foundation Ambassador,” said Chiarelli. “Edmonton is a special place and I’m looking forward to building strong connections in this city and helping further the great work that the Edmonton Police Foundation does.”

To commemorate the Edmonton Police Service’s 125th year in 2017, the Oilers will dedicate its game on March 7, 2017 to EPS 125 when the team plays the New York Islanders at Rogers Place. During the 2017-18 Oilers season, Oilers Entertainment Group will host a major fundraising gala in support of the Edmonton Police Foundation. More details will be announced at a later date.

Prior to his current role as Oilers President of Hockey Operations and General Manager, Chiarelli graduated from Harvard University with an Economics degree in 1987 and played for the Harvard men’s hockey team from 1983-87. He began his career in hockey after graduating with a law degree from the University of Ottawa and was hired as the Director of Legal Relations for the Ottawa Senators in 2000. In 2005, Chiarelli was promoted to assistant General Manager of the Senators and he served in that role for one season before being hired by the Boston Bruins in 2006, where he served as General Manager for eight seasons. Chiarelli guided the Bruins to the Stanley Cup Final twice during his tenure in Boston, including winning the Stanley Cup in 2011.
